Nordic Folk Tradition and Musical Innovation: Musik Västernorrland's Autumn Tour 2026

During the autumn of 2026, concert halls and local venues across Västernorrland will be filled with powerful sounds and stories from Nordic folk and world music through a new initiative from Musik Västernorrland. With the goal of strengthening and developing the vibrant music life in the region, a concert series is being organized featuring three expressive acts: Cuadra Collective, Erling Fredriksson, and Skogen. All three pay homage to tradition while also showcasing musical renewal and personal artistic expression.

Three Profiles – Cuadra Collective, Erling Fredriksson, and Skogen

Cuadra Collective, a dynamic quartet led by Christian Cuadra, sets out on tour with a blend of newly composed Nordic folk music, improvisation, and genre-crossing contemporary sounds. The group’s ability to both preserve musical roots and innovate within the tradition makes their concerts an experience for those seeking both familiarity and new impressions. A particular highlight is the concert at Pipeline in Sundsvall on September 6, 2026, where the youth ensemble Mittfolk will be the opening act—a venture that strengthens regeneration and aims to create a living folk music tradition.

Erling Fredriksson delves into the cultural heritage and identity of Tornedalen in the performance "Ettheen aina Ettheen/Forward Always Forward." With stories predominantly delivered in Meänkieli and a musical breadth that spans folk, jazz, ballads, and world music, Fredriksson invites the audience on a personal and poetic journey of discovery. This concert takes place at Sveateatern in Sundsvall on October 17, 2026, and is part of the Musik i Norr collaboration, a tour exchange between the music institutions of Sweden’s four northernmost counties.

The third act, Skogen, is a cross-disciplinary collaboration between renowned musician and composer Martin Hederos and the award-winning author Elin Anna Labba. Together, they create a program where text and music are woven together in an innovative and emotionally charged manner. The result is a concert format that portrays both melancholy and hope, where storytelling and melody interact and reinforce one another. Skogen performs at Sundsvalls Teater on November 27 and at Svanö Folkets Hus on November 28, 2026.
