Amanda Jerlov's new single "house on fire" takes its starting point from a crisis image: a house is in flames, but someone still believes the damage can be contained. The song was released on October 30 and follows a narrative perspective that witnesses a relationship coming to an end, yet continues to try to repair it instead of facing what is happening.

In the song's central metaphor, the narrator imagines that the problems can be drowned, that the broken pieces can be put back together, and that life can return to normal. Jerlov has described the driving force behind the story as a mixture of strong attachment and stubbornness. The more she cares about the person, the more determined she becomes to keep the relationship alive—even as she realizes it’s falling apart.

This contradiction is captured in the line “I care too much, so I won’t care about it.” Instead of portraying denial as indifference, the lyrics paint it as a reaction to powerful emotions: it can feel easier to look away than to accept that love alone cannot fix what is broken. The image of the burning house gives the emotional tension a clear form, while the narrator's attempts to repair the damage make the story tangible and human.

The Words at the Song's Core

Jerlov wrote "house on fire" together with Daniella Binyamin, Dennis Svennebäck, and Joakim Buddee. Buddee is described as the producer behind Ida-Lova’s hit "Svagare än jag." The collaboration gathers four songwriters around a story built on carefully chosen phrasing, especially in how the central line allows care and avoidance to exist side by side.

For Jerlov, attention to language is no side issue in music creation, but a central part of her work method. She has said that she sees herself more as a lyricist than as a singer and that she can spend hours returning to a single line until the words express exactly what she wants to say. The goal is for the lyrics to carry weight in English-language pop rather than being overshadowed by the music’s other elements.

The single continues with the warm, organic indie pop sound associated with Jerlov’s previous single, "i’ve got a boyfriend." Among her stated sources of inspiration are Lizzy McAlpine, Gracie Abrams, and Role Model—artists whose music highlights songwriting and personal storytelling in today’s pop. "house on fire" uses a similarly close perspective and makes the relationship the song’s main driving force.

Jerlov’s debut EP "notes from a soap opera" was noted by Swedish media, including Aftonbladet, Nöjesguiden, Nyhetsmorgon, and Dagens Nyheter. She releases music via AWAL in the United Kingdom and plans to release her debut album in the spring of 2027. With "house on fire," she further develops her indie pop sound while holding on to what she describes as central to her work: finding the words for a feeling that can be hard to admit.
