GERD explores the need for genuine closeness in “Lonely Phone People” ahead of album release

With the single “Lonely Phone People,” released on August 21, 2026, GERD invites listeners to a thoughtful reflection on the search for real closeness in a world where digital interaction has become the norm and isolation increasingly widespread. The song stands out as a restrained, dramatic ballad, and GERD’s characteristically magnetic voice blooms at the intersection of sensitive vulnerability and subtle musical tension.

GERD herself describes the song as an observation of the paradox of seeking reality in the digital world: “Maybe it's madness to escape into the world of phones and hope to come out with a sense of something genuine. I wanted to write about real closeness, and how lonely it can become to isolate yourself so much that you end up longing for genuine contact – with almost anyone.” This honest lyric gives new depth to her music and permeates every note of “Lonely Phone People.”

The single also serves as a preview of GERD’s upcoming album “More Water Than Anything,” to be released on September 25, 2026. GERD describes the album as her most personal project to date, where she has opened creative doors that were previously closed. The result is songs that reflect a newfound vulnerability, and the lyrics explore both self-doubt and the healing that arises from creative movement.

The work on the album was shaped to a large extent by time spent on a secluded island in Värmland, where forest, water, and the silence of the long Nordic nights deeply influenced the mood and themes of the music. Nature, mythology, folklore, and solitude created a unique atmosphere, and the sense of isolation coexists with the quiet movements of nature and old Scandinavian tales that characterize the album's narrative complexity.

GERD’s journey to this point has been marked by both international attention and critical acclaim. The debut single “Lies for a Liar” was praised outside Sweden’s borders, and at the P3 Guld gala she was named “Future Artist.” Her dynamic live performances have strengthened her reputation as a distinctive stage presence. Ahead of the new album, singles like “Hurts,” “Truth To Be Told,” “Louder and Louder,” and “Crazy” have been lauded in outlets such as Hunger Magazine, Wonderland, and Clash.

The cover for “Lonely Phone People” is a moody press photo by William Eggert that captures the song’s introspective and atmospheric feeling. While the full intensity of the album will become clear upon its release in September, “Lonely Phone People” already sets the tone for GERD’s personally resonant and universally relatable exploration of loneliness, the longing for closeness, and the healing in honest self-expression.
