With the premiere of the stage production Sann Kärlek at Sagateatern in Linköping, singer and songwriter Emi Li presents her new single “Toxic Love” – a powerful and deeply personal portrayal of psychological abuse in close relationships. Inspired by her own experiences, Emi Li creates a song that not only depicts destructiveness but also illustrates a transformation: from the intoxication of initial infatuation, through manipulation and control, to insight, self-respect, and the courage to break free from a harmful relationship.
“Toxic Love” stands out for its honesty and its purpose to offer comfort and strength. The lyrics follow a journey from darkness to self-empowerment, evident in lines like "You cast your shadow on my light" and the hopeful "I rise to walk with open eyes." Emi Li’s intention is to create recognition and solidarity, to give voice to psychological abuse and encourage those affected to reclaim themselves. The personal message simultaneously seeks a universal tone; Emi Li has expressed that if the song can make even one person feel seen or find strength, it has fulfilled its purpose.
