The Songs Carry Robyn’s Return to Stockholm

Three planned concerts at Avicii Arena during the summer had been consolidated into a single performance at Stockholm’s 3Arena in October when Robyn took the stage shortly after nine o’clock on Saturday evening. Present were 32,124 people: not sold out, but a considerable audience for a homecoming whose strongest moments were less about the event’s magnitude than the relationship between the singer and the songs. The arena’s size sometimes worked against that connection, creating an unnecessary distance between the artist and the people she was addressing.

The opening was subdued and personal. Her silhouette appeared behind a white curtain in blue light as “Blow My Mind” began, before “Fembot” and “Talk to Me” gave the music a clearer electronic pulse. The audience needed a moment to let loose. That changed with the fourth song, “Hang With Me”: sitting on the edge of the stage, she let the melody carry through the venue while thousands sang along. It was an early example of how directly her private emotional language can become a shared experience, without any elaborate theatrical apparatus.

Large screens, carefully crafted lighting, and a rotating platform formed the backbone of the stage design. Pyrotechnics marked some of the more intense sections, but the effects rarely took center stage. Much of the performance rested on her body language and distinctive dance. During “Dopamine” she lay on the stage in the spotlight; in “Sexistential” she moved toward the audience along the barricade.

The newer songs dealt with aging, parenthood, love, and sexuality. Between numbers, she spoke of infatuation and separations. She joked about her age and how embarrassing life can be, and expressed gratitude for once again standing before her home audience.

The older material accounted for several of the musical highlights. “Be Mine!” turned into a singalong, while a stripped-down arrangement gave “Show Me Love,” the song that established her internationally, an almost intimate character. With few embellishments around her, the melody was allowed space to make an impact. “Honey” moved in a different register: the repetitive rhythms and the suggestive atmosphere let the electronic music unfold gradually, moving beyond the immediate burst of the big pop chorus. That patience suited the evening, even if the transitions between the different musical expressions didn’t always hold together.

There were stretches where the tempo slowed, and parts of the new material lacked the immediate power of her most beloved recordings. The show was not seamless. However, the final section truly picked up speed: Zhala joined in “Indestructible,” followed by “With Every Heartbeat” on the way to the encores. These came in the form of “Missing U,” “Call Your Girlfriend,” and finally “Dancing On My Own.” It was an exceptionally strong closing suite, with songs that hold joy, longing, loneliness, and independence within the same pop framework.

The concert lasted an hour and 47 minutes, making room for more than just the biggest hits. An imperfect arena show, but a convincing return.
