When Testament take the small stage at Skogsröjet, it’s immediately clear that the audience stands out from several of the festival’s earlier gigs. The average age seems lower and even before the first song, fans are packed tightly at the front, ready for a solid dose of classic thrash metal.

For my own part, this moment feels somewhat special. Testament is one of those bands you grew up with—a name that’s always been present over the years and a natural part of the thrash metal scene. Seeing them now at Skogsröjet is, therefore, more than just another festival performance.

The band open at full force, and it doesn’t take long for the audience to respond. Already during the second song, a festival-goer attempts to crowd surf across the sea of people. The ride is short and never reaches the security barrier, but it still speaks volumes about the energy in front of the stage.

During the same song, an unexpected incident occurs when someone throws an object onto the stage, hitting vocalist Chuck Billy. The seasoned frontman, however, doesn’t seem to care much. He calmly picks up the item, sets it aside, and continues the show as if nothing had happened.

The setlist offers a well-balanced mix of older classics and newer material. Highlights include Into the Pit, Practice What You Preach, Shadow People, Electric Crown, and Over the Wall, with the older songs receiving an especially warm welcome, while the newer material shows that Testament is still looking forward.

Despite playing on the festival’s smaller stage, Testament feel bigger than the setting. They fill the stage with presence and confidence earned over more than four decades together. Chuck Billy leads the band with his characteristic voice while the rest of the members deliver razor-sharp riffs, heavy rhythms, and a synergy that feels as tight as ever.

Interaction with the audience is minimal, but in truth, there’s no need for much banter. The music speaks for itself, and the crowd responds with raised fists, headbanging, and constant enthusiasm at the front of the stage.

Testament make it abundantly clear how classic thrash metal should sound. There are no unnecessary frills or attempts to modernize the sound—just uncompromising riffs, razor-sharp precision, and a heaviness that has made the band one of the genre’s most respected names. For those who grew up with Testament, this serves as a reminder of why the band is still among thrash metal’s true giants. With a performance that mixes new and old without losing intensity, this is a much-appreciated feature at Skogsröjet.
