Dave Lofts is among Ireland's most exciting emerging artists, recently signing with London-based B-Unique Records. His debut EP explores the struggle to reconcile three parts of himself: faith, addiction and mental health, and the desire to love while feeling flawed. His contemplative songwriting sets him alongside fellow B-Unique artists such as James Bay, Kodaline and Kingfishr.
His lyrics come through with authenticity almost through the theme of storytelling, a lonely musician who’s Just A Man who escapes his demons if only for a moment, through his music that offers a temporary relief that sobers him up. In Mary, he expresses that while he is on the road traveling, success does not remove the emotional distance he feels and longs for.
Drunk particularly stands out with its upbeat sound underlined with the darker message in Lofts’ lyrics about self-destruction and hitting his low point. He’s remembering when his relationship first started, and then coming to his own conclusion that “only Christ would want me”, believing that anyone coming into his life would give up on him and “what’s gonna kill you is gonna kill me”, being aware that his self-destructive behaviour will hurt the woman he loves.
Holy sets the tone of the album, introducing the reoccurring feeling of shame, redemption and identity throughout all the tracks as he sees the angel and devil inside of him. His 2026 EP references Christ, crucifixion, angels and the devil, Mary which all suggest someone who sees their internal battles in spiritual terms. Lofts seems to ask whether someone can love him while he struggles to love himself. Love is portrayed as a source of redemption, being the possibility to escape from his inner demons. At the same time, he recognizes that expecting someone else to save him comes at a cost. His unresolved struggles leave the person he cares for carrying the weight of his pain.
Lofts patiently awaits the woman he feels deeply for to draw him back from emotional isolation, as he hides in the shadows wondering Where Is The Love, knowing in his heart that his demons have pushed her away when she is still the source of his salvation. She is the one who can pull him back into the light, however she pulls away from him. The metaphor of rain and falling leaves reflect on his depression, and alcohol is no longer a habit; it’s intertwined with his loneliness.
The album ends with vulnerability. He’s regretful about the things he said to her, he didn’t mean it. He’d do it all again, not knowing what would have happened but he’s all hers. I’m All Yours “When I am tired and I know my flaws; we were in love at least we thought it was”. He hopes he can genuinely be happy. He knows he is flawed and he isn’t sure if what they had was really love. Lofts leaves listeners with vulnerability instead of certainty. He is strong at expressing his willingness to expose uncomfortable truths about addiction, loneliness and faith without pretending to have overcome them. It's an emotionally honest debut that demonstrates Dave Lofts is an artist with a distinctive voice. He will be performing in Stockholm at Nalen on November 14, 2026.
